Southampton GC UK vs Southampton GC USA - Ryder Cup event is taking place in New York 11/9 - 13/9. Updates posted below as received:
12/9 - 10.40 Fridays singles did not go well. Lost all 4 morning matches; afternoon interrupted by weather (it's glorious back at home boys - John) won 1, lost 1 and in other 3 we are 2 down, 1 down and all square. Hoping to pick up some more wins now that they are getting accustomed to fast greens.
No further updates, except that they got hammered........

The Malcolm Calvert Funday scheduled for 12th September has regretably been cancelled due to lack of support. It has been replaced with the Malcolm Calvert Medal No. 40 which will also be held on 12th September. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Saturday 2nd May saw SGC take on Hockley Golf Club in the Gales Over Fifties competition (many thanks to Stevie Hobbs for asking me if I was looking forward to playing - I know I may be looking a little less than my best these days but over 50 ??!?!?!?!!??! ). A very close run match was decided on the very last hole in the last match with Hockly coming out victorious 5-4. In keeping with tradition the teams enoyed a beer together afterwards:

Southampton Golf Club march on in The Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic. Having been fortunate enough to secure another home draw in round 3, this time against Test Valley, our boys halved the match 2.5 / 2.5 meaning the last pair (Mick Jones and his opponent) had to play a sudden death play off. The match was finally decided in our favour on the 4th extra hole, the Test Valley player slicing into the woods off the tee and losing his ball whilst Mick held his nerve to hit a long straight drive followed by a superb approach into the green leaving himself approx 6ft from the pin. Job done. Well done to Steve and the team - we await the draw for the next round. Both teams enjoying a well earned beer and sandwich are pictured below:

The result of the final of The Ken Kennard Cup final, played on 5th April - Dave Whitehouse beat Gary Myers 3 and 2.
***********************************************************
As many members will be aware, President Ken Kennard has now stepped down from his position. Ken has been involved with Southampton Golf Club since the 1930's and has been arguably it's most vocal and influential member during that time. In order to acknowledge Ken's contribution to the club and thank him for his efforts Eddie Hemsley, on behalf of the members, presented Ken with a memorial trophy containing a "mystery" gift. The presentation was made at the end of Captains Drive in Day on 4th April - a day which also raised almost £80 for the captains charity and was won by John Baynes and Craig Street with a phenomenal 55!!! Photos of the presentation to Ken and John (minus Craig) are below:

Following on from their victory over Romsey in round one of The Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic, our team faced a team from New Forest Golf Club and secured their place in round three with a 3.5 / 1.5 win.
Special mention should go to Chris and his playing partner Kev who, showing real commitment to the cause, if not to the rules of the competition, continued their halved match on to 2 extra sudden death holes before being told that this was not necessary and that matches could in fact be halved!!!
The 2 teams are pictured below:
